Caitlin Blais, fractional chief growth officerFractional Chief Growth Officer

I find profitable growth levers, clarify what's blocking them, and build the conviction to act.

I get under the hood until I understand the system better than most people inside it. Then I build conviction around the highest-impact move, rally your team, and don't stop until it ships.

Profitable growth consultant who led Shopify's international expansion and organic program

Most growth leaders are paid-first. I'm not. I built my foundation in organic and content, where there's no budget and every lever has to earn its place. When you cannot buy growth, you study your way to it. My hypotheses are high conviction. What I put on the board wins.

At Shopify I led the entry and scale into Europe, spanning marketing mix optimization, ads localization, opening the product and marketing in new languages, and localizing the checkout experience. I lowered prices across 130 markets to drive retention and unlocked new payment methods that generated more than $100M in growth in a single year. I also rebuilt Shopify's organic growth program from scratch, taking it from 30% to 100% year-over-year in under a year.

My background in organic growth means I'm wired to find only the most profitable levers, even across paid channels, and I follow the volume and the money wherever it goes, including finding a $20M bug simply by being persistent and actually looking at the thing.

I bring a broad range of expertise, work fluidly from junior ICs to the C-suite, and build trust throughout. I'm relentlessly curious about complex problems, inject energy into every team I work with, and bring the kind of clarity that any executive can act on immediately. I don't stop until the thing ships, and I act with conviction. I've operated at every stage, acquisition through integration, peak and trough, zero to hypergrowth in a year.

Give me the hardest problem there is. I'll solve it and make it ruthlessly clear.

How I Work

How we can work together.

01

The right hand to the CMO or Head of Growth

You have the team and the vision, but not the bandwidth to chase every thread. I get under the hood, trace the numbers all the way down, and return with the clarity and conviction you need to act immediately. I make your life measurably easier.

02

The growth leader for the CEO

You need someone to own growth end-to-end: find the highest-leverage moves, build the case, rally the team, and ship. I operate with the authority of a full-time executive without the full-time cost. If it goes on the board, it wins, because I don't put it there until I'm certain.

03

The unlock for VC & PE portfolios

Your portfolio companies have profitable growth sitting untapped: an untested price, an underpulled organic lever, a market they haven't entered. I find it, unlock it fast, and grow the P&L across companies at any stage. The highest-ROI engagement in the portfolio.

Operated at every stage.

Series A through post-IPO. Lean teams. High stakes.

01

From early-stage to post-IPO.

02

Peak to trough.

03

Zero to hypergrowth in a year.

What I Do

What you'd hire me for.

Fractional Chief Growth Officer

Senior growth leadership on a fractional basis. I own the function, find the highest-leverage opportunities, and drive them to outcome with full conviction. Typical engagement: 2–3 days per week over a 3–6 month retainer, embedded with your leadership team.

International Expansion Consultant

Entry strategy, localization, pricing, and marketing execution for companies scaling into new markets. I've done this at Shopify scale. Typical engagement: a 6–12 week diagnostic and roadmap, optionally followed by hands-on execution support.

Organic Growth Consultant

Rebuilding or accelerating organic programs that compound over time. High-reward, low-cost levers that don't require budget to sustain. Typical engagement: a fixed-scope audit plus ongoing weekly cadence with your content and SEO teams.

Fractional Chief of Staff to CMO

The trusted right hand a great CMO needs but can't always find. I understand the problems, clear the ambiguity, and return with answers that move things forward. Typical engagement: 1–2 days per week on a rolling monthly retainer, working directly alongside the CMO.

Localization Strategy Consultant

Making products, pricing, and marketing work in new markets, not just translated, but genuinely local. Payment methods, checkout experience, language, cultural fit. Typical engagement: a market-by-market strategy sprint with clear deliverables per region.

Measuring AEO & AI referrals

How I track traffic from AI assistants.

The exact GA4 + Looker Studio setup I use to isolate referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot — and attribute conversions back to them.

GA4 segment — AI assistant referrals

Dimension Session source contains any of:

  • chat.openai.comChatGPT
  • chatgpt.comChatGPT
  • perplexity.aiPerplexity
  • gemini.google.comGemini
  • claude.aiClaude
  • copilot.microsoft.comCopilot
  • you.comYou.com
  • poe.comPoe

UTM convention for AEO-driven links

Where I can control the link (citations, brand mentions in answer engines, partner placements), I tag with:

utm_source=chatgpt | perplexity | gemini | claude | copilot
utm_medium=ai_referral
utm_campaign=aeo_{topic}
utm_content={prompt-or-citation-id}

Backed up with a custom channel group in GA4 so AI referrals don't get bucketed into generic Referral or Direct.

The point isn't a vanity number on a personal domain — it's that the measurement stack is already in place the day an engagement starts. AEO without attribution is guessing.
